Identity and the American Landscape: The Photography of Wing Young Huie
Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: February 13, 5:30–7:30 pm
ArtTalk with Wing Young Huie, 5:45 pm
Celebrated photographer Wing Young Huie reveals the often overlooked or invisible individuals that make up the fabric of the American landscape. Whether held together by class, race, health or social concerns, Mr. Huie’s beautiful, thoughtful, and at times humorous portraits provide a space in which the human drama may be played out and the minor actor is allowed center stage. Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
APRIL 3–MAY 17
Fragments and Memories: Selected Works by Bill Davis and Christopher Pekoc
Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: April 3, 5:30–7:30 pm
Initially used by monks,
palimpsests are partially
erased and rewritten instructional
parchments, which continue to
transmit traces of previous information.
Bill
Davis has created a
contemporary series of palimpsests
using photography, chalkboards
and the visually chaotic ephemera
that remain after his lectures on light and optics. Christopher
Pekoc also begins with photography. Using photographs he has
taken, the artist’s images undergo a process of deconstruction and
reconstruction as they are cut, collaged and industrially stitched
back together again. Pekoc draws upon forgotten lores, beauty,
nature and literature to relay haunting tales of transformation.
Both Davis’ and Pekoc’s artwork will hold interest for the artist and
intellectual alike; both have received national and international
recognition for their stunning images.
Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
MAY 22–JUNE 28
Lens Painting: Flower Photograpy by Jim Cheatham & After Audubon
Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: Friday, May 22, 5:30–7:30 pm
Side by side, these
two exhibitions celebrate
the flourishing
of springtime. Jim
Cheatham’s photography
captures
lustrous and intimate
views of flowers. As if
taken from the vantage
point of a small bee
or insect, his rich close-ups nicely complement the prints that
will be on view by John James Audubon as well as the masterful
reproduction prints created by M. Bernard Loates. Created for and
after Audubon’s seminal Birds of America collection, this collection
of prints highlights species found in the continental United States.
After Audubon is a traveling exhibition made possible through the
Rankin Art Gallery at Ferris State University.
Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
JULY 3–SEPTEMBER 6
Works of Wonder
Underwritten by Chemical Bank
Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: Friday, July 3, 5:30–7:30 pm
Drawing upon the sensation of childhood
wonder and delight, this exhibition
will spark the imaginations in viewers
of all ages. From artfully constructed
animals, both real and imagined, made
from scraps of tire tread by
Ji Yong-Ho, to precisely cut pieces of paper
creating delicate silhouettes, work by
emerging artists will be displayed,
highlighting their creative use of
materials and concepts. Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
SEPTEMBER 11-NOVEMBER 1
A Corporate Collection

Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: Friday, September 11, 5:30–7:30 pm
Enjoy a sampling of images culled
from a major corporate art collection.
Photographs and works on
paper by iconic artists from the
19th, 20th, and 21st centuries will
be on view. Artworks by George
Catlin, Bernice Abbott, Helen
Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol and
the infamous crime photographer
Weegee are but a few of the highlights
in this excellent exhibition. Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
NOVEMBER 20–JANUARY 1
Focus on the Figure: Flatwork by Leslie Adams and Sculpture by Multiple Artists
Location: Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II
Reception: Friday, November 20, 5:30–7:30 pm
Leslie Adams’ portraits of
women pull the viewer in with
their silent strength and dignity.
Beautifully rendered, her naturalistic
oil paintings capture the models’ individual personalities.
In this exhibition, Adams will
showcase new figurative paintings
and charcoal drawings
along the gallery walls while
figurative sculptures by several
Michigan artists will mingle
throughout the room. Refreshments provided by Tabor Hill Winery.
